At West Church, membership is not about putting your name on a roll.

It is about making a meaningful commitment to a local church family.

It is a way of saying, “This is where I want to worship, grow, serve, and walk with others as we follow Jesus together.” Participating members as active members who attend regularly and are able to vote, hold office, and serve in leadership positions. Membership is rooted in covenant, not convenience.

That covenant matters because the Christian life was never meant to be lived alone. West Church values doing life together and doing ministry together. Membership gives shape to that shared life. It calls us beyond casual attendance into real belonging. It invites us to become part of a community marked by grace, worship, service, growth, and shared mission.

Participating Membership is also practical. The Life@West handbook outlines covenant obligations that include regular worship attendance, active participation in a small group for spiritual growth, faithful prayer for church leaders, systematic giving, and joyful use of the gifts, talents, and abilities God has given each person. In other words, membership is not simply about what you receive from the church. It is also about how you strengthen the church through your presence, prayer, generosity, and service.

There is something good and steadying about that kind of commitment. In a time when many people feel disconnected, membership says that relationships matter. It says shared responsibility matters. It says the local church is not just a place you visit, but a people you belong to. West’s handbook speaks of membership as a “mutual relationship of value, commitment, and purpose,” and that is a beautiful picture of what the church can be at its best.

Membership also gives people a real voice in the life of the church. Under the headship of Christ, West’s membership holds final authority in major decisions. Participating members have the privilege of voting in business meetings, being considered for office, and serving in leadership roles that require membership. That means membership is not passive. It is one of the ways we share in the care, direction, and future of this church body together.

Just as important, participating membership reflects a heart posture. It is not about status. It is not about being more important than someone else. It is about saying yes to accountability, yes to unity, yes to spiritual growth, and yes to the work God is doing in and through this local body. It is a public way of embracing the life of the church with humility, faithfulness, and love.

At West Church, we know people are all at different places in their journey. Some are exploring faith. Some are newly following Jesus. Some have walked with Him for many years. Membership is not the first step for everyone, but for those who are ready, it is a meaningful one. It is a way of planting your feet and saying, “I want to be part of what God is building here.”

We believe the church is strongest when people move from simply attending to truly participating. When people worship together, pray together, serve together, grow together, and bear one another’s burdens, the beauty of Christ’s body becomes visible. Participating Membership is one way we live that out at West.
